California fun

I gotta tell ya, I wouldn't want to live in California right now, but it sure is fun to live next to! We try to make it to CA every year to play at the beach. This year we were able to go to Disneyland as well. Cale was finally 42", but Carli was only 39" with 1" heels on, so she was 1" too short to go on most of the big rides.Disneyland just decorated for Halloween this week, so it was fun to see all the decorations. Cale's favorite holiday is Halloween, so he especially loved it.

Space Mountain was spoofed up as well with spooky music and a scary ghost. Cale and his cousins were excited until they were in line and could hear the music. They all panicked and backed out and refused to ride it. I decided to go on it all by myself and tell Cale how scary it really was. When I explained that the scariest part was the music, he said, "Mom, I told you before, if I wasn't so tired, I would go on it, but I'm just too tired." Yeah right, Cale.

I guess this shirt is too little now.
Sorry, Danielle, the flash must be a little bright!
We always buy the clam chowder for dinner at Disneyland. yum yumThe Finding Nemo ride was boring, but Danielle loved it.

Carli of course loved the castle and everything princess-related
We rode this ride at 11pm. Poor Cale was barely hanging on. Who am I kidding? I was barely hanging on.
We didn't get to Fantasy Land until after the girls fell asleep, and I really regret that. They would have loved it. We concentrated too much on the rides for Cale and not enough of the kiddie rides for the littler ones. So, Spencer and Cale were in line for the Dumbo ride, and I tried to wake Carli up for 5 minutes to see if she wanted to go on the ride with them. She finally woke up and said she did want to go on the ride. So I picked her up and handed her to Spencer over the fence just as he was getting onto the ride.
Here is a picture of her instantly falling back to sleep before the ride even started. The poor thing doesn't remember it at all. I had to take a picture to prove to her that she did in fact go on fun rides and that she LOVED it.
We had to walk 1/2 a mile back to the car and Cale was sitting on the front little foot bumper of the stroller. He fell asleep sitting up and almost fell off the stroller, so we decided to put him in a safer position.
We also spent 2 days at the beach in Oceanside, where our resort was.

Danielle of course loved eating everything: sand, seaweed, cigarette butts, you name it.

Cale loves being buried in the sand.

Carli with her cousins: Nate and Jane
Danielle loved the water after Spencer spent lots of time just patiently sitting with her and letting her warm up to it.
Something obviously caught their attention! I wonder what it was.
Or maybe they were just giving Cale some privacy as he relieved himself in the ocean. Can you see the little stream? I can.
Cale loves boogie boarding. I didn't get any pictures of it though.

We went down to San Diego to the La Jolla Cove to take Cale and Carli snorkeling. They've been practicing in our pool and are very proficient, so we thought we'd give the REAL THING a try. BIG MISTAKE. We took them down the stairs to the little beach in the cove and were all happy putting on our gear when this huge wave knocks all of us over. Carli starts screaming and I lose my breathing tube in the ocean somewhere. Everybody on the beach was watching us, wondering what we would do next with 2 hysterical children. We pulled them up to safety and proceeded to put the gear back on, but now they were too freaked out to do it. But I'm too prideful to not do it. I had to prove to all those people that we were not crazy-our children COULD and WOULD snorkel!

So we finally got everything on and headed into the water. Amazingly, Spencer found my breathing tube and I hurried and attached it to my goggles. I took Cale and we headed out. I was all happy looking at the fish when I look over and see that he was swimming with his head out of the water. He informed me that he was getting water in his eyes and it was stinging. So, I tried to tighten his goggles, but he screamed out in pain when I accidentally pulled his hair and got a mouth full of salt water. He started to cry, so Spencer switched children with me and I proceeded to accidentally make Carli cry somehow now.

She complained that she just wanted to go back, so I made her look down at the fish all the way back to shore. We got back and sat and rested and tried to convince the kids that this was FUN and that we need to go back out and try again. They just sat and stared at the water and shook their heads. Finally, we brought out the granola bar and asked them if they wanted to feed the fish. This got their attention, so we got our gear back on and went out. Cale obviously didn't get the whole idea of feeding the fish, because he just dropped the granola bar into the water without watching the fish come to eat it. Thank goodness I was watching-there were so many fish! Anyway, Carli came out long enough to quickly drop hers too, and then we headed back to safety-we thought...

We were sitting on a rock by the stairs that lead back up to the parking lot when a GIGANTIC wave hit us, then hit the wall right behind us and bounced back onto us again. Carli's screaming bloody murder and we are covered in sand from head to toe. The lifeguard gets on his megaphone and tells us to move to a more secure spot. Yeah, thanks Mr. Lifeguard! Good idea.

We sadly didn't take any pictures of this experience, but just picture very wet, sandy, crying children, with 50 people laughing at us and you've got it!!!

On the way home, everyone slept the entire way to Yuma, where Grandma and Grandpa live.

Yes, Cale? Do you have something to say? haha

silly girl

Danielle has this evil laugh she likes to do when she finds something to play with she's knows she's not supposed to. I finally got it on video, but the video is too long to upload, so I'll have to video her later.

I also don't let her carry her blanket around the house anymore, so now she grabs the kitchen towels as a substitute. It's annoying but cute. I feel so mean taking away her blanket, but she seems happy enough with the kitchen towel, so why not break the habit early before she gets too old to really fight me on it?

Cale dressed Danielle up and she wore the scarf all day.

Carli in her typical outfit-jewelry and painted nails and all
Like I've said before, I love taking pictures of my kids from the back when they are concentrating hard. They are so cute.

This is the closet under our stairs. Spencer just built shelves and Kristin painted them for me. Now I have a lovely pantry where I can finally hold all of my food storage! I've been waiting my whole life for this.

There's hope!

Well, I don't know if you remember, but Cale played soccer last year and pretty much never touched the ball. He just didn't care. He had no desire to fight for the ball. He told me all the other kids wanted the ball, so they could have it. I was very disappointed and afraid he would never be competitive and aggressive.

But we decided to try soccer again this year, and lo and behold, he has changed! He's chasing the ball, making goals, making me proud! I guess he was just too young last year. He's one of the oldest on his team, but he's still the smallest! Way to go, Jarvis genes.

Labor Day Camping

It's amazing that mountains, pine trees, cool weather, and snow in the winter are only a couple of hours away from Phoenix. We drove up to the Payson area and camped with Spencer's family for Labor Day.

Carli, Cale, and Danielle Smile, Spencer!

Carli loves hiking. She kept begging and begging to go hiking
I have know idea what they are doing
A rare find in Arizona is a creek that actually has water in it, but we camped right by one! We were able to play in the water and build dams. Cale was trying to get in the water through some tall grass, and we noticed that he was trying to walk through a HUGE spider's nest. The black spider was as his fist, with little baby spiders crawling all over the place. It was disgusting, I'm so glad he didn't actually touch it.

There is something about building a dam that really excites the male species
Spencer was bored one afternoon, so he decided to make a swing. It was a really fun swing, but the camp managers made us take it down because of liability.

It rained the second night constantly, with thunder loud enough to set off car alarms. The next morning was understandably not very delightful. The wood was wet so we couldn't start a fire, all the chairs were wet, and all of our clothes were wet. Kristin was going home that day and I begged her to take me with her. But it stopped raining mid-morning and so I stayed (acually, I stayed because Spencer would have killed me if I'd bailed out.

We went to a fish hatchery and hiking and to a lake to fish. It was a nice, relaxing weekend.

Poor Danielle hated everything about camping. She just learned how to walk, so the uneven ground was very challenging for her. I would be frustrated too if I fell every 10 seconds onto the muddy ground, or if I fell and bruised my face on rocks.

She is terrified of Spencer's brother, Steven, for some reason. We think it has something to do with his deep voice and his urge to scare little children. Check out this video:

Exhausted, don't you think???

When we got home, Danielle was SOOOO happy! She just walked aimlessly around our home, smiling and laughing, pointing at everything. It was hilarious.
